Reaction, speed and coordination are three different things

They get lumped together as "reflexes" and they behave quite differently. Reaction time is how long it takes you to respond to something you could not predict. Click speed is repetitive motor output with no unpredictability in it at all. Aim and tracking add a spatial component: you are not just responding, you are steering. Someone can be excellent at one and ordinary at the others, which is why measuring them separately produces a more useful picture than a single "reflex score" ever would.

Why 270 milliseconds is mostly not muscle

The number surprises people who expect nerve conduction to dominate. In fact the signal reaches your finger quickly; the expensive parts are earlier. Light has to be converted into a neural signal in the retina, that signal has to travel to the visual cortex and be recognised as a change, and a decision to move has to be issued. Together those account for well over half the total. This is also why a choice reaction — respond only if the shape is a circle — costs another fifty to a hundred milliseconds: adding a decision adds time in a measurable, repeatable way that was one of the first quantitative findings in psychology.

Your equipment is part of your score

  • Display refresh. A 60 Hz screen can add up to 16 ms before you even see the change; a 144 Hz panel cuts that to 7.
  • Input latency. Wireless mice and low polling rates add a few milliseconds each.
  • Touch versus click. Phones cost most people 20 to 50 ms compared with a wired mouse.
  • Browser load. A dozen open tabs genuinely slows the page and therefore your measured time.
  • Position. A finger resting on the button beats a finger hovering above it.

What actually changes your reaction time

Sleep is the largest short-term factor by some distance — a bad night costs more than months of practice would gain. Age matters over the long run, with reaction speed peaking in the early twenties and slowing gradually afterwards. Caffeine helps modestly and briefly. Practice helps a little and then stops, because you are approaching a floor set by biology rather than skill. The honest range for most people is about twenty to thirty milliseconds of improvement, which is real but small next to the swing caused by being tired.

Do fast reflexes mean anything else?

Only weakly. Reaction speed correlates slightly with processing speed measures, and processing speed is one component of cognitive ability, but the chain is loose enough that an individual's reaction time predicts almost nothing about their reasoning.
