What a brain age score really is

Several mental abilities change with age in a predictable, well-measured way. Reaction speed peaks in the early twenties and slows by roughly one millisecond a year afterwards. Processing speed follows the same curve. Working memory declines more gently. A brain age test takes your results on tasks like these, compares them against the population average at each age, and reports the age at which your combined performance would be unremarkable. That is all it is — a comparison, not a scan, and certainly not a diagnosis.

What actually declines, and what does not

The popular picture of ageing as general decline is wrong in an important way. Fluid abilities — speed, novel problem solving, working memory — do fall from early adulthood onwards. Crystallised abilities — vocabulary, general knowledge, professional judgement — keep rising into the sixties and often beyond. A sixty year old is genuinely slower on the rounds in this test and genuinely better than a twenty year old at the verbal reasoning test. Any single number that claims to summarise a brain is hiding that trade.

Why your result moves so much

  • Sleep. One bad night can add ten years to this score. It is the largest single factor.
  • Equipment. A phone instead of a mouse costs 20 to 50 ms of reaction time, which reads as several years.
  • Practice. Your third attempt will be better than your first, and your brain has not changed.
  • Time of day. Most people are measurably slower in the first hour after waking and late at night.
  • Caffeine. A modest, short-lived improvement, mostly on the speed rounds.

The honest caveat

Researchers do estimate something called brain age, and it comes from MRI scans analysed against thousands of others — a serious measurement with real clinical interest. This page is not that. It is a comparison of four short tasks against published averages, taken in an uncontrolled setting on unknown hardware, by someone who may or may not have slept. Treat a young result as a pleasant fact about your reflexes today and an old one as a reason to check your sleep before anything else.

If you want a more useful measurement

The individual rounds are more informative than the combined number, because each one tells you something specific rather than averaging four things into one. Take reaction time and symbol search on their own for speed, and n-back for working memory. For reasoning ability, which this test does not touch at all, the free IQ test is the right page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a brain age test?

It measures several abilities that change predictably with age — reaction speed, memory span, processing speed and attention — and reports the age at which your combined performance would be typical.

Is brain age a real medical measurement?

No. Researchers do estimate brain age from MRI scans, but that is a different thing entirely. A four-round web test is a fun comparison against population averages, not a clinical result.

Why is my brain age younger than my real age?

Most likely because you are rested, using a mouse on a fast screen, and familiar with tests like these. Practice and equipment both shift the number by several years.

Which abilities decline with age?

Processing speed and reaction time decline earliest and most steadily from the mid-twenties. Working memory declines slowly. Vocabulary and accumulated knowledge keep improving into the sixties.

Can I improve my brain age score?

Sleep, aerobic exercise and taking the test on a proper mouse with a fast screen all help. Practice also helps, which is exactly why the number should not be read as a measure of your brain.

Is this brain age test free?

Yes, it is completely free online with no account and no email, and you can retake it as often as you like.
