What a diagrammatic reasoning test actually measures
Diagrammatic reasoning is the ability to take a claim expressed in words and check it against a picture — or, just as often, to build the picture yourself and notice that the claim was sloppier than it sounded. Exclusion means the groups share nothing at all: no whole number is both even and odd, so those circles never touch. Chaining is the interesting case — three groups where A relates to B and B relates to C, but A and C have nothing in common. How to get more of them right
The single most effective technique is to check every diagram with a concrete member rather than an abstract feeling. Take the option in front of you, pick a real thing — one particular tiger, the number seven, a Tuesday — and ask which regions it belongs to according to that picture. If the picture puts your example somewhere it does not belong, the option is dead and you have eliminated it in about three seconds. A second technique is to look for the region a diagram creates but the world does not: overlapping circles quietly assert that something lives in the shared sliver, so if you cannot name a single thing that would sit there, the overlap is wrong. Finally, resist the pull of symmetry. Attractive, evenly spaced three-circle diagrams are the classic wrong answer, because most real category triples are lopsided.
