A simple item lets four of those attributes sit still and moves one of them: an arrow turns forty-five degrees at each step, or a set of circles grows by one member, or a triangle cycles through solid, half and empty shading. The four wrong options are not random figures. Each one is the correct sixth figure with a single attribute pushed off the rule — the right rotation but one shape too many, the right count but the wrong shading, or simply a repeat of the fifth figure for people who spotted that something changes but not what. The four rule families you will meet

Rotation. An asymmetric figure turns by a constant angle each step, clockwise or counter-clockwise. Rotation items always use a shape with no symmetry, so a ninety degree turn can never be mistaken for no turn at all. Count. The number of elements climbs or falls by one, or oscillates on a short cycle such as one, three, one, three. Shading. Fill state moves through a cycle — solid, half, empty and back to solid, or a two-state flicker between solid and empty. Size. The figure grows or shrinks by a fixed amount per step, or alternates between a large and a small version. Because the cycles have different lengths, combining a three-step shading cycle with a two-step size cycle produces a pattern that only repeats every six figures, which is what makes the last third of the test genuinely demanding.

How to read your score

Your number of correct answers is mapped onto the familiar scale where 100 is average and 15 points is one standard deviation. Treat the result as a band roughly ten points wide rather than a precise value; an eighteen item test simply cannot resolve finer than that. The table below gives the standard interpretation.

How to work through a series efficiently

Do not stare at the whole strip hoping the answer will announce itself. Compare two adjacent figures at a time and name the single difference out loud in your head — "it turned", "one more circle", "it emptied". Then check that the same difference holds between the next pair. If it does, you have the rule and you can build the sixth figure in your imagination before you even glance at the options, which is by far the fastest way to answer and the only way to avoid being pulled toward an attractive distractor. If the difference between the first pair does not repeat, you are probably looking at a cycle rather than a progression, so count how many steps pass before the first figure's state comes back.

Two practical habits raise most people's score by a couple of items. First, when an item resists you for more than a minute, mark your best guess and move on; nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, and the item you skipped may be worth less to you than the two easy ones waiting at the end. Second, check every attribute before you commit, even the boring ones. A matrix test presents a three-by-three grid and asks for the missing tile, so the rules run in two directions at once and you can cross-check a row against a column.
