How many moving things can your attention hold?
Multiple object tracking is one of the cleanest experiments in attention research. Nothing is hidden and nothing has to be memorised: every ball stays visible from the first frame to the last. All you have to do is keep a mental label on the few that were highlighted while a crowd of identical balls drifts and bounces around them. It sounds trivial, and for two or three targets it is. Somewhere around four the task falls apart, and the way it falls apart is remarkably consistent from person to person.
That limit is the point. Working memory for words or digits is measured in items you can recall; tracking is measured in items you can keep hold of in real time. The two capacities overlap but are not the same, which is why a person who can recite eleven digits backwards may still lose the fourth ball halfway through a level.
How this test is built
Each level places a set of identical balls in the arena and highlights a few of them for two seconds. The highlight then disappears and every ball starts moving in a straight line, bouncing off the walls, for five seconds. When motion stops you click the balls you believe were highlighted, exactly as many as were shown. Get all of them right and you advance; miss one and the test ends with your final level as your score.
Twelve levels are laid out so that difficulty rises along two axes at once. The crowd grows from seven balls to eighteen, which increases the number of distractors that can be confused with a target during a crossing. The number of targets grows from two to five, which loads attention directly. Speed also creeps up level by level, shortening the time available to recover a target once it has been lost. Level twelve — five targets among eighteen fast balls — is deliberately at the edge of what human attention can do.
Reading your score
Your score is the highest level you cleared. Because a single mistake ends the run, the score is a threshold rather than an average, and it is normal for the same person to vary by a level or two between attempts.

What actually helps
The single biggest gain comes from where you point your eyes. Beginners chase targets one at a time with their gaze, which guarantees that the moment they fixate on ball A, balls B and C drift into ambiguity. Better trackers park their eyes near the centre of the target group and let peripheral vision do the work, moving the gaze only when the group's centre moves.
The second trick is grouping. Instead of holding three separate items, hold one shape — the triangle whose corners are your targets. That shape deforms as the balls move, but it remains one object for your attention to carry, and one object is cheaper than three. Experienced players describe exactly this without being taught it.
Beyond strategy, the ordinary factors apply. Fatigue costs about a level. A small screen costs a level, because balls that are physically close are harder to separate. Trying to talk or listen to speech while tracking costs a level too, since language competes for the same central resources. What does not help is squinting, tensing up, or blinking less — tracking is an attentional process, not a visual acuity one.
How it differs from memory tests
People often expect this to feel like the visual memory or sequence tests, and it does not. Those tests hide the answer and ask you to reproduce it from storage; the demand is on encoding and recall. Here nothing is ever hidden, so the demand is entirely on sustained, divided attention across time. The failure feels different as well: memory failures arrive as a blank, while tracking failures arrive as a swap, where you are certain about a ball that turns out to be the wrong one.
That is also why the two tests correlate only loosely. Tracking scores line up better with tasks that require monitoring several things at once — driving in traffic, refereeing, keeping an eye on a group of children — than with tasks that require holding information still.
Is a higher score better at anything real?
Tracking capacity is one of the few laboratory measures with a plausible everyday counterpart. Athletes in team sports tend to score above average, and there is reasonable evidence that tracking training improves performance on further tracking tasks. Whether it improves anything outside the laboratory is genuinely unsettled, and any product that promises it will make you a better driver is going well beyond the evidence.
