Verbal memory is the part of your mind that holds words you have recently met and lets you recognise them again later. It is doing quiet work all day: it is why you notice that a speaker has already used a phrase, why you know you have read a paragraph before, and why a name in a long document starts to feel familiar the third time it appears. The design is deliberately unfair in one specific way. At the beginning almost every word is new, so the first dozen answers feel trivial. But the pool of words you have already seen grows with every turn, and the test leans harder and harder on that pool. What the test is actually measuring
Psychologists call this recognition memory, and it is different from recall. Recall means producing an item from nothing — listing every word you have seen would be recall, and it would be far harder. Recognition means judging an item that is placed in front of you, and human recognition is astonishingly good over short spans and enormous sets. Where recognition fails is in what researchers call source monitoring: the word is obviously familiar, because it is an ordinary English word you have read thousands of times, but you must decide whether it is familiar from this run. That distinction is the whole difficulty. The list is built entirely from plain, everyday words for exactly this reason. If it used obscure vocabulary, novelty alone would give the answer away and the test would measure reading habits instead of memory.
How the words are chosen
The page carries its own list of well over a hundred common nouns, verbs and adjectives. On each turn the test decides between showing a word you have never seen and repeating one from your seen pile. Early in a run the odds strongly favour a new word, because a repeat is meaningless when you have only met four words. As the run lengthens the repeat probability climbs toward roughly half, which is the point where the answer carries the most information about your memory. Repeats are drawn from anywhere in your history, not just the last few turns, so a word you met at position three can reappear at position eighty. Once every word in the list has been shown at least once, the test keeps going by drawing exclusively from the seen pile — the correct answer becomes always SEEN, but by then almost nobody trusts themselves enough to say so.
Reading your score
Score is the number of words you answered before losing the third life, so the number counts both correct and incorrect responses on the way. Higher is better.

How to get a better score honestly
The single largest gain comes from slowing down. There is no timer here, and answering half a second later costs nothing while answering wrongly costs a third of your run. The second gain comes from strategy. People who score very highly rarely have better memory; they have a system. The most common one is to stop tracking the seen pile and start tracking its opposite — after thirty or forty words, so much of the list has been shown that the words you have not seen become the smaller, more memorable group. Another approach is chunking: group words into small themed clusters as they arrive, so that recalling one drags the others with it. A third is simply to notice that late in a run the base rate favours SEEN, and to let that break your ties when you genuinely have no memory either way. None of these are cheating; they are what a good memory does automatically.
How it differs from the other memory tests here

Number memory measures how long a string you can hold in a rehearsal loop for a few seconds. It rewards patience and strategy alongside memory, it runs on whatever device and whatever level of tiredness you brought to it, and it ends on a single mistake.
