How to score higher without cheating yourself
Do not try to memorise numbers in a list. Look at the whole grid at once, soft focus, and let the arrangement register as a pattern. Fix the first three positions firmly, since those are what carry you into the run, and trust that the later ones will still be faintly available when you get there. Click at a steady rhythm rather than as fast as possible: hurrying makes you misclick a neighbouring square, and a misclick costs a whole level. Above all, take the strike and move on. People lose runs because they freeze on a square they cannot recall, and the hesitation erases the rest of the picture.
How it differs from the other memory tests
Sequence memory shows you an order and asks you to reproduce it, so it tests temporal recall — what happened after what. The chimp test removes time entirely: everything is presented at once and the ordering lives in the numerals, not in the sequence of events. That makes it a purer measure of how much spatial information you can freeze in a single glance. It is also why the failure feels different. In a sequence test you drift off track partway through; here you either still have the board or you have nothing at all.
What a high score does not mean
Working memory span correlates with general cognitive ability, but weakly enough that no single run of this test says anything trustworthy about an individual. Someone who reaches 13 has an unusually good visual short-term store and probably a good strategy; that is the entire claim.
