Every item on this page is a figural series. You get four or five frames in order, each drawn from the same underlying rule, and one empty frame at the end. Six or fewer options sit underneath, and exactly one of them is what the rule produces next. The figures are ordinary geometry — circles, polygons and arrows, drawn in outline, half shading or solid — because the aim is to strip away everything except the structure. Why induction is not deduction

The work is careful application, and a correct answer is guaranteed by the premises. An inductive item hands you no rule at all. You have to manufacture one out of a handful of observations, and your answer is only ever the best-supported guess rather than a certainty. That difference shows up in how people fail. Deductive errors are usually slips in application. Inductive errors are usually premature commitment: seizing the first pattern that explains two frames and never testing it against the third and fourth.

How the items get harder

The first third of the test moves one attribute at a time. A row of circles grows by one each frame; a triangle turns another forty-five degrees; a shading cycle runs outline, half, solid and back to outline. These items are gettable at a glance, and their job is to establish that you are reading the format correctly rather than to separate strong candidates from average ones. The middle third introduces cycles that do not match the number of frames, so a rule confirmed on frames one and two can quietly fail on frame four. The final third runs two independent rules at once — sides increasing while the count increases, or rotation advancing while shading alternates — and the distractors are built so that each one satisfies exactly one of the two rules. That is the point at which checking both features before you answer stops being optional.

Your raw total out of eighteen is mapped onto the familiar scale where 100 is average and fifteen points is one standard deviation. How to do better without cheating yourself

The single most productive habit is to name the rule out loud, in words, before you look at the options. "Sides go up by one and the shading alternates" is a testable claim; a vague feeling that the third option looks right is not. Once you have named it, check it against every frame including the first, since the most common trap on this test is a rule that explains the last two frames and contradicts the first. Then, and only then, read the options, and eliminate rather than select — most distractors are correct on one attribute and wrong on another, so finding the wrong attribute is faster than verifying the right one.

Two smaller things help as well. Watch the clock loosely rather than closely: fifty seconds an item is generous for the early ones and tight for the last few, so bank time early instead of admiring easy answers. And if an item genuinely resists you after half a minute, mark your best guess and move on, because nothing is deducted for a wrong answer and an unvisited item is guaranteed to be worth nothing.
