Why a timed IQ test measures something a slow one cannot
Most online intelligence tests give you as long as you like, which quietly changes what they measure. Given unlimited time, the question stops being how quickly can you reason and becomes how hard a problem can you eventually crack. Both are real abilities, and they are not the same ability. This test takes the other option deliberately: thirty-five items, fifteen minutes, a rising difficulty ramp, and an item count set above what most visitors will manage. You are not expected to finish. How far you get before the clock stops you is not a failure condition — it is the measurement.
Psychologists call this the difference between power and speed. A power test hands you progressively harder problems and lets you work until you stall; a speed test hands you problems you could all solve eventually and sees how many you clear per minute. Verbal analogies ask you to name the relationship inside one pair and find the same relationship in another, which is a test of relational precision rather than vocabulary size. Odd one out items give four members of an apparent category and ask which breaks the membership rule, forcing you to hold several candidate rules in mind at once. Word problems cover short deductions, orderings, set overlaps and rate arithmetic. Finally, matrix puzzles are entirely visual: a three-by-three grid follows a hidden rule about shape, count, shading or rotation, and exactly one of six tiles completes it.
The families are interleaved rather than blocked. That matters under time pressure, because switching between verbal and visual reasoning costs a second or two each time, and a test that let you settle into one mode for ten questions would be measuring something easier than the kind of thinking most real work asks for.
The rules that make the clock count
Two design choices do the work. First, an unanswered item scores the same as a wrong one, so leaving a question blank is never rational — a guess with two options eliminated is worth half a mark in expectation and a blank is worth nothing. Second, there is no penalty for being wrong, which removes any reason to be cautious. Together these turn the test into a pure throughput problem: your score is the number of correct answers you can produce in nine hundred seconds, and the optimal strategy is to move fast, guess early on anything that resists you, and come back with the Back button only if the clock allows.
Reading your score
Your raw total is mapped onto the familiar scale where 100 is the population average and fifteen points is one standard deviation. With thirty-five items the estimate is steadier than a short quiz gives you, but it is still a screen rather than an assessment: read the number as the centre of a band roughly eight points wide.

Pacing the fifteen minutes
- Budget roughly twenty-five seconds per item. If you are still reading a question at forty seconds, you have already lost more than the item is worth.
- Guess immediately on anything that does not open up in one pass. Marking and returning is cheaper than staring.
- Do the arithmetic in your head or not at all. Reaching for a calculator costs more seconds than it saves on items this size.
- Use a real keyboard and screen if you can. Matrix items are small on a phone, and squinting is a measurable time cost across thirty-five questions.
- Take it once, rested. Retakes drift upward because you remember items, and the drift is larger on timed tests than untimed ones.
- Do not look anything up. The moment you search for a series rule you are measuring your search skills.
How this differs from the other tests here
Run all three and the comparison is the interesting part. The quick 5-minute test is a twenty-item sample that puts you in a broad band fast. The culture-fair test is visual only and untimed in spirit, which makes it the fairest of the three if English is not your first language and the closest thing here to a pure power measure. What no online test can do
A supervised assessment controls the room, watches how you approach each problem, and compares you against a properly stratified norm sample rather than against whoever happened to visit a website.
